Helen Zafar: First--No, it's not EXTREMELY important, even for the Ivys. Second--Absolutely- those things will offset not studying abroad.Now, some detailed honesty...To tell you the truth, GPA is probably the most important factor in your grad application; for a social science, you want at least a 3.8, and you are obviously doing very well--so keep that up. Immediately following this is experience/research within your field. Study abroad is not as common as some would think. If it is a concern to you: in your personal statement, a note saying that you reg! ret not being able to do study abroad, but it was just not an option (and explain you have a family and such, if you wish).Trust me when I tell you that GPA will be extremely important, as well as your research. GRE Verbal will be VERY important as well--so I hope you got at least a 700 on it (if you plan to go to a competitive grad school). If you are looking for an Ivy admissions--you want at least a 750 Verbal, or higher. Language skills will also beef up your application. Not having a study abroad experience will not hold you back in the least. You probably know most of the stuff I listed above, but this is the most important part of my answer (because it's not something that readily comes to mind for some people):Getting into grad school is different from getting into college. When you are trying to get into college, admissions wants to see you've done everything under the sun availible to you. They NEED to see this because EVERYONE applying to the good colleges have g! ood grades (presumably). "Everyone" has a 4.0, so activities s! et you apart. Grad school admissions is NOT like that; it's not even like that with competitive grad school admissions. Not everyone will have a 4.0 GPA (but most will have above 3.9). They are more interested in: Were you dedicated to THIS AREA (did you show this with publications, etc.)? ****Will you be a good fit for their program?**** Can you find an advisor who shares your interests? The way they figure it: if you have above a certain GPA, with certain GRE scores (which you will be if you keep it up)--you will be capable of suceeding at their school (i.e. you can handle the workload and excel). Activites are not the determining factor in grad school, and to me, study abroad is an activity. Sure sure, you learned things about the country and the literature there (or whatever you may have done there; I am not sure), but it's not the same as doing extensive research at home. It is WAY more important for them to find someone who shares specific interests with faculty. So, ! what I am saying is, the determining factors of acceptance for grad school and college (after GPA/GRE) can be equated: activites (for college apps)="fit" (for graduate apps)Study abroad will not help all that much, even in an area like comparative lit. That's not saying it wouldn't help your app; it definately would. But, it is not a life or death thing if you do or don't have it. Your research/publications are infinitely more important than taking a few classes in Europe. Your interest in and suitability for the program are right at the top of the list.I think being a non-traditional student will also help you. You have maintained a very high GPA and done well for yourself, even with having a family. This is very difficult; this is difficult even without a family. Most people in your situation would be doing mediocre at best, and so I think that will work to your advantage. My advice to you is to apply to the schools you truly want. August Hubbard: I work in a school with three special education classes (one gifted, one behavioural, and one Developmentally Delayed). In all three of the classes, the boys outnumber the girls- even in the gifted class. I'm not saying that there are more boys than girls in special ed across the board, but in my school, that's the way it is.
Samara Siewers: My husband and I are in the same boat. I was in gifted classes (also more girls than boys) and he didn't do well in school. He is ADD as all get out and had a terrible time in school- and he is creative, smart, and all that, but was never identified as gifted. Children can be creative (which ADD/H kids generally are) but this isn! 't how most classes are structured, so that gift may not be nu! rtured. Please remember special education doesn't mean that a person isn't smart. In fact, to be learning disabled, you typically have average intelligence or better, with a deficit in a specific skill area (and the deficit may not even be that severe, it depends on where you are). There are lots of gifted LD people out there. Boys tend to get identified for special needs because teachers look for more issues with boys, especially if they act out. A girl may have academic problems, but because she is quiet, she doesn't get identified. I likely could have qualified with a math learning disability, but was never identified, and I struggled the entire way through. The female brain tends to be more verbal, which is a more prized skill in gifted classes (and in school in general). Girls start verbally reasoning sooner than boys developmentally, so they have more practice by the time school starts. My fiance has a BA in psychology and had medicore jobs paying around $30,000/yr, but now he is getting his Ph.d and will eventually be a professor and make much more than that $30,000. I would be surprised if there was an institution that did not have a financial Aid Dept. they will be more than glad to help you with this process, always ask , "what should I do next?" at the end of each conversation.
Tamatha Neubaum: To get financial aid, you must first fill out a FAFSA (google it for the website). This is available in January, but most likely you will have to wait until Feb/March when your parents get there W-2's from there employers, along with yours if you have worked in the past year. That form lets you pick up to 4 colleges to send the results to, at which time once the form is submitted and e-signed (you will have to get a pin as well, which is easy to do- fill out the id stuff and you get one), you will get a Estimated Contribution number- which tells you how much the government says your parents and yourself can contribute to your education. The lowered the ! number, obviously, the more aid you are eligible for. It will also let you know what Pell Grant money you are eligible for. Once this is all set, you have to apply to those schools, and once you pick the school in March, they will send a letter telling you what you qualify for in grants and loans- this usually comes around June. You can always begin looking for scholarships now, there are many websites with those, and your counselor can help with that. Your school most likely offers scholarships as well- ask! Eventually I left that attorney. I struggled to find another attorney job. Eventually, I got a job in 2003 at firm paying the princely sum of $25,000 per year. I moved out of my parent's house but was still subsidized by them. Dad kept threatening to cut me off, but I lived in an e! xpensive state the cheapest place to stay I found was $1,500 a month all inclusive. My paycheck was like $430.00 a week take home. Eventually, I did go solo, it was hard, but I did make some money in real estate closings for 3 1/2 years. Now the real estate market stinks and I have no income, and I am trying to plan my next move, which may be back to my parents temporarily. I have interviewed for some associate positions and the salary range was 38k-55k, this is pretty low for somone with 5 yrs experience and a doctorate degree. I would have been better off not going to College and instead picking up a trade like being an electrician. I go to the dentist on 10/16 for my wisdom teeth to be removed and an apicoectomy, which I will be put to sleep for. Below is the link to explain what it is... Anyway, I called my OB/GYN office today, to ask and make sure it would still be safe for me to get this done, and the lady that I talked to (not the dr) said it should be fine.. Well the word SHOULD is buggin me, don't know why.. Wait.. Yes I do, b/c if by some chance I do get pregnant this month, I don't want to do anything that could possibly hurt the baby. There are a lot of women who get dental work done before even realizing they were pregnant. You'll be fine! If you feel better, call your dentist and ask him. However, chances of it happening this month are about 25%...Pretty low. I've been TTC for the past 2 years. It takes most healthy couples atleast 1 year to concieve, not the case for all but the case for most. If you just got off of birth control to become pregnant, itll take longer than 1 month to conceive....answers 2:and also I did put this in the trying to conceive section, but thought this might be good tooanswers 3:definitely contact your Oral surgeon. The first trimester is critical to fetal development, and although small, there are some risks of possible birth defects depending on what agents the surgeon uses for the sedation. General recommendation is that all elective procedures, esp anesthesia, be postponed until after delivery. Failing that the second trimester is the safest, or late in! the third trimester when a premature labor would not hazard t! he baby. My recommendation is to get a pregnancy test, if neg, then delay the TTC, get the oral surgery then try again. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can increase the chances of dental troubles. You also probably won't be up for surgery for several weeks after delivery. Additionally if you plan to breast feed, some of the sedative agents can transfer into the baby via breast milk. So that could mean a disruption in your feeding....
Corrinne Ruozzo: The optical audio output of any tv is not controlled by the tv remote control. It is a constant signal going to your home theater in a box. You have to use the home theater in a box volume control to go up or down. Hope this will help you out.

Let me guess you have a Samsung or Philips TV and you want to buy the same brand of surround sound system because you think it will work better if its the same brand, or it will match the TV. One you don't want to buy a all in one system. Two, because these systems are so cheap, they use very cheap parts, and when they break (and they will), do you think you would spend the money to have them fixed ? No you will end up seeing how much it is to have fixed and end up having to buy a whole new system, or buy a receiver to work with the speakers it came with. Third you cant hook up the equipment the way you want or need it to because of the limitation in the system. And most importa! ntly it sounds like crap and your trying to convince yourself it sounds good when it really doesn't because of spending your hard earned cash on the system. Or you just don't know better, and if it works that's all your care about.Do some homework, read some reviews (Although there is even allot of miss information from "so called professionals", so read from the better magazines like Absolute Sound and Stereophile. ) and learn before you buy what makes better equipment and speakers.What you want is a system that actually sounds good, will work reliably, and you will then have a system you will be proud to own, and not waist your hard earned money.A good system will consist of speakers from a manufacture that specializes in just making speakers as they put more thought and design into speakers that sound good to their ears. Electronics that use high quality parts, and have just the features you need as this will keep your costs down, and the simpler the better for sound r! easons. Remember the simpler the circuit and the least amount! of stages or features that the signal goes though to degrade the sound.
