what is a 'consumer' camera?

Charis Deguzman: I consider a camera to be "consumer" if it is not specialized, and you see many people buying them- like the entry level-semi pro DSLR's. Once you get into the more exotic cameras, such as Leicas, Miyamas, and Hasselblads- those are more specialized, not for the average consumer, and they cost a pretty penny or two.

Raymon Fiene: 'consumer', 'prosumer', and 'professional' are usually applied to DSLR cameras. Each represents an overlapping level of camera. The 'consumer' is the less expensive, entry level camera. The 'professional' is the most expensive, highest performing camera that professionals demand and can justify. The 'prosumer' is midway, in-between and is enjoyed by both us amateurs and many professionals.

Marhta Teahan: There are several different reasons... there's a deg! ree of truth in what you say, in that the kind of kit needed to obtain professional-level results is gradually getting smaller (especially with the onward march of digital cinema cameras, which are being used by more and more film-makers instead of 35mm motion picture film). However, there's still a considerable gap between professional digital video cameras and their consumer-grade equivalents: 1) Larger sensor - allows better colour reproduction in normal lighting and clearer images in low lighting. Also (in some cases) opens up the possibility for shooting in 4K, a new digital video standard that's got roughly twice the horizontal resolution and twice the vertical resolution of HD. 2) Better lenses - good glass = sharper image with fewer aberrations, plus more possibility for creative camerawork and composition. 3) Better codec - video is not so heavily compressed, allowing for more fluid, life-like motion and no blocky artefacts like you see with the AVCHD codec in cons! umer cameras. Also allows shooting in higher frame rates. 4) T! he body can be attached to various stabilisers and rigs for aerial shots, crane shots, underwater shooting, etc. ... and so on. Sabra Roers: Consumer cameras are special editions. They're very easy to use and that's their only purpose. So meth-, smack-, crackheads and so on can "consume" their stuff and still make some awesome pictures. Which is a big secret! The companies don't want you to know that. Now you propably think...druggies would never buy a cam...and you are totally right! But they steal them. So the guys who have been stolen from will buy new cameras. It's a perfect concept.Have fun!...Show more

Clemente Schoeck: A consumer camera is any camera sold by the common stores like Walmart and Target, etc. The word consumer in this usage means for anybody! However that said a professional could purchase an "entry level" Canon or Nikon DSLR at one of these stores and use it for money making or professional purposes.A co! nsumer camera is also a term used to indicate cameras easy enough for the non-technical person to operate without reading the instruction book ( because they are too lazy)....Show more
